About me
Jay Lee is a Malaysian dance artist based in Glasgow, known for his wide smiles, wide feet, and even wider arm swings when whacking. He believes in big emotions, bold moves, and a good groove. Whacking, the style he specializes in, began in the gay clubs of 1970s Los Angeles and evolved from a movement called punking — a form of expression and resistance against homophobia, racism, and ableism. Holding a Master’s degree in Architecture, Jay began his professional dance career in February 2025. His work blends his background in design with movement that celebrates improvisation, rhythm, and emotional expression.
In addition to whacking, Jay has also trained in popping, which influences his approach to musicality and body control. Deeply interested in community and representation, Jay is part of the WhackingScotland collective and also performed in Small Town Boys with Shaper/Caper, a company known for celebrating queer stories through dance and theatre. His involvement in Small Town Boys also reflects his growing interest in theatre and storytelling through performance.
